Significant Hall of Fame Signature Collection In Framed Displays Including Harry Wright, Hugh Jennings, John McGraw, Ty Cobb, etc (30)
Starting Bid - $2,000.00 , Sold For - $8,225.00
Offered here is a significant collection of thirty Hall of Fame signatures, each of which has been individually matted and framed together with a photo or similar likeness of the respective player.
This collection is comprised almost exclusively of particularly rare Hall of Fame signatures, including Harry Wright, John McGraw, and Hughie Jennings. Many of the players represented in this collection plied their trade during the "dead ball" era and all are now long deceased. This framed collection represents the foundation of the extraordinary and comprehensive Hall of Fame signature collection which is presented in several lots in this auction and was assembled with great care over a period of many years. While the majority of the signatures are of the "cut" variety (scripted on a tiny portion of a lined or unlined sheet, in many cases cut from letters or documents), the collection also includes a few signed postcards, 3 x 5-inch index cards, and other assorted small items (duly noted in the description). This is an extraordinary Hall of Fame signature collection both with regard to the desirability of the signatures offered and their method of presentation. Our consignor collected with the intention of having each of his items displayed on the walls of his home museum. Thus, each cut has been handsomely matted and framed together with a likeness of the respective player, which, in many cases, is a high-quality black-and-white print purchased from the Baseball Hall of Fame. The value of the signatures notwithstanding, the framing costs alone for this collection would probably amount to thousands of dollars today. The signatures, penned in a variety of inks, all grade "9/10" and the cuts are in Excellent or better condition. The collection is comprised of the following cut signatures: Frank Baker (signature taken from a cut portion of a personal check), Dave Bancroft , Jim Bottomley , Roger Bresnahan , Ty Cobb (signature is on a cut newspaper photo), Mickey Cochrane , Thomas Connolly , Hugh Duffy , Johnny Evers (inscription on a complete postcard, dated "10/31/42," that reads "Hello my friend Geo.- Thanks for the kind wishes - John J. Evers - 1942"), Frankie Frisch (Frisch has added the notation "The Old Flash" above his signature), Chick Hafey , Harry Heilmann (on a lined index card), Rogers Hornsby (inscription on a cut newspaper photo, "To Otis - Best Regards - Rogers Hornsby 1962"), Hughie Jennings , Ban Johnson (signature taken from a portion of an American League player's contract dated April 16, 1925), Bill Klem , Kenesaw Landis (Landis has added the date June 7, 1930 below his name), Tony Lazzeri , Rabbit Maranville (Maranville has added the year, "1931," below his name), Bill McGowan , John McGraw (signature appears to have been taken from either a check or legal document), Bill McKechnie , Kid Nichols (two small areas of tape residue touch upon each end of the signature), Branch Rickey , George Sisler (on a "Baseball's Great Hall of Fame" postcard, the card is not mounted with any other likeness of Sisler), Pie Traynor , Dazzy Vance , Roderick Wallace , George Weiss (signature taken from contract or legal document), Harry Wright (his black fountain pen signature is part of a small inscription that reads "Please return to Harry Wright - Mgr. Phila. B.B.C."). The largest framed display in the collection measures 13 x 20 inches, while the smallest measures 7 x 11.5 inches. The majority of the displays measure 10 x 13.5 inches on average. Please Note: Due to the number of framed items in this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. LOA from James Spence/JSA.
