1916 George Grantham Bain News Photo of Honus Wagner (E135 Collins McCarthy Image)
Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $2,350.00
Original photo of Honus Wagner taken by well-known baseball photographer George Grantham Bain. This photo captures Wagner taking a practice cut on the sidelines during his penultimate season with the Pirates in 1916. This is an outstanding action photo with his powerful swing captured frozen but with the bat, upon close inspection, still showing the slightest blur of movement. Wagner's name and team affiliation were etched into the negative (a common practice of Bain's) and thus appear along the top border of the photo. A Culver Service proprietary stamp appears on the reverse, as does the stamped caption "Hans Wagner — shortstop of Pirates who will play first next year — Sept 18, 1916." Wagner was forty-two years old at the time of this photo and playing in his seventeenth season with Pittsburgh. Despite the fact that his best years were behind him, he still managed to play in 123 games and bat .287 for the season. As the caption correctly states, Wagner moved to first base in 1917, which was his final season in the Majors. This is a particularly interesting photograph for card collectors as well as Wagner or photograph collectors, as this is the very image used to create Honus Wagner's 1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy baseball card. The photo (4 x 6 inches) has a tiny crease in the upper left corner and is in Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $2,350.00
