1927 to 1930s Babe Ruth Photograph Collection (5)

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,762.50

Collection of five-high quality Babe Ruth photos, three of which are beautifully matted and framed, capturing the fabled "Sultan of Swat" in a variety of poses both on and off the field. Three of the five original photos date from exactly 1927. 1) Crystal-clear photograph of Babe Ruth in a classic batting pose. The photo appears to date from the late 1920s and was most likely taken at the Yankees spring training facility. The photographer's name, "Thorne," is ink-stamped on the reverse. The ink stamp identifies Thorne as the team's official photographer and provides spaces for information to be filled in. The vintage pencil notations filled in list the team ("Yankees"), player ("Babe Ruth"), and position ("Outfielder"). 8 x 10 inches. The photo displays a few very tiny surface wrinkles and is in apparent Excellent condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 13.5 x 15.5 inches. A color copy of the photo's reverse is included for display purposes. 2) Circa 1927 Babe Ruth news photo. Ruth is pictured in pinstripes striking a batting pose. A vintage pencil notation on the reverse reads "The Ring" and a red stamping indicates that it came from "The Stanley Weston Collection." A vintage label reads "Babe Ruth - A typical pose," while a contemporary label dates the photo to 1927. 4.5 x 9 inches. Vg, with a few minor tears and creases. 3) Circa early 1930s George Burke photograph. Ruth is pictured in a batting pose wearing his Yankees road uniform. A few areas of the photo near Ruth's head evidence airbrushing. A George Burke credit stamp appears on the reverse. 8 x 10 inches. Ex-Mt, with adhesive residue on the reverse from having once been mounted. 4) Famous news photo of Ruth and Gehrig fishing on a boat in 1927. The vintage pencil notation on the reverse reads "Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, just back from a barnstorming tour of the U.S., shown with some of their catch during a fishing trip at Sheepshead Bay. Nov. 1927." Also appearing on the reverse are a cut magazine page picturing this very image, which is captioned "Ruth and Gehrig on fishing trip Nov. 10, 1927," and another cut newspaper article which reads "Mr. Babe Ruth scores a home run with the rod and reel. He shows you his first catch of the day. But if he tells you it was the largest of the day, you may say, 'Oh, yeah? Or even 'Baloney!' Because Pipgras hooked largest-2 1/2 pounds." 7 x 9 inches. Technically Vg, with a few light creases, but it presents as Ex. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 11.5 x 13 inches. A color copy of the photo's reverse is included for display purposes. 5) Photo of Ruth and Gehrig posing with the captain of the boat in 1927. This photo was taken on the same day as the previous photo, November 10, 1927, but appears to be a vintage second-generation print. An ink notation on the reverse identifies the captain as Gus Rau and it has been inscribed by Rau to a friend. According to our consignor, both this photo and the previously listed photo were originally obtained from a member of Gus Rau's family. The original photo appears to have had a horizontal tear, which can still be seen on this second-generation print. 7.75 x 9.75 inches. Ex-Mt. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 13 x 15 inches. A color copy of the photo's reverse is included for display purposes.
