1929 Philadelphia Athletics Team Panorama

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,880.00

This large panoramic photograph, which displays exceptional clarity and contrast, captures twenty-seven members of the 1929 World Champion Philadelphia Athletics posing together at Shibe Park. Included here are manager Connie Mack, Jimmie Foxx, Eddie Collins, Mickey Cochrane, Al Simmons, Lefty Grove, Howard Ehmke, Kid Gleason, Eddie Rommel, George Earnshaw, Rube Walberg, and Bing Miller. This photograph was most likely produced just prior to the World Series, as the printed caption along the base reads "Philadelphia 'Athletics'-American League Pennant Winners-1929." The photographer's credit ("J. Bodziak-Philadelphia") appears in the lower right. The 1929 Philadelphia A's are considered by many to be one of the greatest ballclubs ever assembled. Led by Grove and Walberg on the mound, and Simmons and Foxx at the plate, the A's won 104 games and easily outdistanced the Yankees by eighteen games. They then made short work of the Cubs in the World Series, defeating their National League rivals in five games. This is a stunning panorama of one of baseball's great dynasty teams. This photo was apparently offered for sale in 1929 and was popular; because of this examples occasionally turn up and this keeps the value reasonable on this piece, compared with other panoramas of lesser significance and quality. In our opinion this panorama represents perhaps the most outstanding value in all of baseball display photography. This is one of the finest examples of this classic that we have ever seen. The photo (29.25 x 7 inches) displays only the slightest hint of toning along the left border and a few tiny surface wrinkles, and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 35.5 x 13 inches. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
