Circa 1890 Allen & Ginter Baseball Advertising Poster

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $2,115.00

Stunning museum-caliber circa 1890 Allen & Ginter advertising poster promoting the company's "Richmond Straight Cut No. 1 Cigarettes." This extraordinary rarity is the only example of this style poster we have ever seen. The poster pictures a striking illustration of a young lad, dressed in the style of the times, about to toss a baseball. The image of the little boy (the personification of youthful innocence) is one of the most expressive we have ever seen in an advertisement of this type and the colorful graphics are equal to that of the Allen & Ginter card-related posters from the era. Ideally, the poster can be definitively dated to either 1890 or 1891 based upon the company histories of both the manufacturer and lithographer. In 1890 Allen & Ginter merged with a number of other tobacco manufacturers to form the American Tobacco Company. That merger was complete at the time this poster was issued, for it bears the American Tobacco Company seal in the lower right corner and Allen & Ginter is listed along the base as "The Allen & Ginter Branch." Antitrust laws eventually forced the break up of the American Tobacco Company in 1911. The lithographer's name, "Lindner, Eddy & Clauss, N.Y." is identified along the bottom of the print. Lindner, Eddy & Clauss was one of New York's largest lithography companies during the late 1800s, but in 1892 it merged with a number of other prominent firms to form the American Lithograph Company. Therefore, this piece had to have been produced by the company prior to that 1892 merger, thereby dating the manufacture of this poster precisely to 1890-1891. This is truly an exceptional display piece in all respects and one that has great potential appeal to collectors in the fields of baseball, advertising, and tobacciana. The poster (16 x 27.75 inches) has four extremely tiny pinholes in the border areas and a few barely detectable light creases which do not in the least detract from its extremely strong Excellent to Mint in appearance. Mounted and framed to total dimensions of 26 x 38 inches. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
