1892-1917 Bob Westlake Team Photo Collection (7)

Starting Bid - $400.00 , Sold For - $1,762.50

Collection of seven early baseball team photos, plus an original photo and real-photo postcard commemorating Cy Young’s eightieth birthday. All of these items originate from the personal collection of Bob Westlake, a former minor-league catcher whose career spanned the years 1886 through 1905. They have been consigned directly to this auction by Westlake’s great grandson, and were found among the same group of family photos as the two highly significant team photographs featuring Sol White that are offered elsewhere in this auction. While not nearly as valuable or as historically important as either of the two Sol White photos, this is a very interesting group of early baseball team photographs. The 1892 Atlanta team photo is particularly interesting as this is a cabinet card, and even though there is some back damage, on the reverse appears the preprinted game schedule for the season. Most of the team photos picture clubs that Westlake played with, and four of them clearly identify either him and/or his twin brother George. The teams, and years (if identified), included here are as follows: Atlanta (1892), New Orleans (1892), Scranton (1894), New Cumberland, West Virginia (no year), Cumberland, Maryland (year faded), Huston B.B. C. (1904), and Bellaire Enamel Works (1917). Sizes range from 6.5 x 4.25 to 9.25 x 7.5 inches. All of the photos display minor tears, chips, and moderate soiling. Each photo has different faults (all can be viewed online) but all are in Good condition overall. Also included with the photos are two items relating to Cy Young’s eightieth birthday party. Bob Westlake was a great friend of Young’s and he was one of the special guests of honor at Cy’s birthday party in 1947. The first item is an original photo (7 x 5 inches) of Cy Young and honored guests (including Westlake) sitting on the dais during the birthday celebration. Ex. The second item is a real-photo postcard of Young issued in commemoration of the event. The photo pictures Young posing on his farm and features a facsimile of Young’s signature printed in white. “80th Birthday – March 29, 1947” is lettered along the base. 3.5 x 5.5 inches, with adhesive residue on the reverse, otherwise Ex. All of the photos can be viewed on our website. Total: 9 items (7 team photos, plus 2 additional photos). Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $1,762.50
