1894 The Temple Cup Two-Step March Sheet Music
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,527.50
Rare 1894 sheet music entitled The Temple Cup Two-Step March composed by John W. Cavanagh and dedicated to "Our Champions - The New York Base Ball Club." The cover features a team photo of the 1894 Giants, including John Montgomery Ward, Amos Rusie, George Van Haltren and George Davis, as well as a small photo of the coveted Temple Cup. Published by Howley, Haviland & Co., New York. The printed notation along the top border, "As played by Sousa's peerless band," indicates the tune's popularity at the time. 1894 marked the first of four consecutive Temple Cup series to determine the champions of the National League. The Temple Cup series pitted the National League pennant winners against the second place club in a best of seven series, with the inaugural event matching the Baltimore Orioles (pennant winners) against the New York Giants. Although Baltimore boasted six future Hall of Famers in its lineup, they proved no match for the Giants, who swept the birds in four straight games, thus earning both the cup and this musical tribute. The reverse advertises for The Mathushek & Son Piano Co. of New York. The sheet music was very likely an advertising giveaway distributed by this company. All items relating to the Temple Cup Series are extremely rare. Because of its small size (slightly smaller even than a cabinet card), this item would compliment many types of collections, including cards, nineteenth-century baseball, 1890s Giants, Temple Cup-related items, and, of course, sheet musics. This is a very substantial piece that, based on the last couple of auction sales we have seen over the past several years, seems to have somehow fallen through the cracks of collector focus. This is possibly because there really is no other sheet music or item exactly like this one (it is much smaller than a traditional sheet music), and therefore does not neatly fall into any particular collecting genre. This piece has a lot going for it, including extreme rarity, and is one of the very few items of any kind known that in a collection can truly serve as representing The Temple Cup series. In the old days of the hobby, some twenty-plus years ago when sheet music collecting was a much more active field of collecting unto itself, this was a special rarity that was actually valued much more highly than today. The sheet music (4.25 x 5.5 inches) has a few tiny border tears along the front and back cover, and minor separation along the folded spine. While technically in Very Good condition, the piece displays as Excellent and is in remarkably high grade, given its fragile nature. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
