Large-Format Christy Mathewson Presentation Photo

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $940.00

This large-format presentation photo, measuring 10 x 13 inches, captures Mathewson in uniform, circa 1905, and was originally a gift from Minerva Mathewson, Christy’s mother. The photographer’s credit, “Unit – N.Y.,” appears in the lower right, as does the handwritten notation, “Presented by Christy’s Mother.” Although the image dates to the early 1900s, this particular example is a high-quality photograph of the original and was most likely produced circa 1920 (the inscription was written on the original, not on the photo). This photo was obtained many years ago from the personal collection of Jane Mathewson, Christy’s wife. It’s not surprising that the family chose to reproduce this particular image (probably for use as a presentation piece to close friends and family members), for it is undoubtedly one of the finest Mathewson portrait images ever produced. Its vintage second-generation status notwithstanding, the photo displays exceptional clarity and contrast, and, when combined with its size, makes for a striking museum-quality wall display. Mathewson photos of this size and quality are exceedingly rare and we cannot remember the last time we encountered a larger example. The photo displays a few light surface abrasions and there is adhesive residue on the reverse from the photo having once been mounted, resulting in minor rippling and a number of light surface wrinkles. Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $940.00
