1908 Cy Young News Photo
Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $705.00
Addendum: This photo was originally described as possibly being a slightly later-generation print as it includes former elements of previous editorial outlining and shading surrounding Young's image. That statement is incorrect. This is an ORIGINAL 1908 photo that has been professionally cleaned. Our consignor had the white-editorial marks (which were quite pronounced) outlining Young's image professionally removed for aesthetic reasons. Despite the removal, the light outline of the editorial marks is still visible.
This early news service photo captures Cy Young, as a member of the Red Sox, warming up on the sidelines prior to a game. Based upon the uniform style worn by Young, the date of this photo can be conclusively pinpointed to the year 1908. A Culver Pictures, Inc., news stamp appears on the reverse along with an illegible paper caption and a number of other period notations and stamps. 1908 marked Cy Young's nineteenth season in the Major Leagues. Despite his advancing age, he proved he was still one of the top hurlers in the game, finishing the year with a 21-11 record and 1.26 ERA. This photo dates from 1908. This image dates from 1908. A hint of previous editorial outlining and shading surround Young's image. 4.5 x 6.5 inches. Vg-Ex, with two small corner chips and minor edge wear. Reserve $200. Estimate $300+. SOLD FOR $705.00
