1915 Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies World Series Celluloid Pocketknife
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,115.00
Presented is one of the rarest high-quality baseball celluloid items and World Series souvenirs known: a celluloid pocketknife featuring portrait illustrations of sixteen members of both the 1915 World Champion Boston Red Sox and National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies. Portraits of the Red Sox are pictured on one side of the handle, and portraits of the Phillies on the other side, with only the managers (Carrigan for Boston and Moran for Philadelphia) identified by name. Babe Ruth's portrait image is not included among those featured on the knife for Boston, but both Speaker and Hooper are included among the Boston portraits, while Alexander and Bancroft are present for Philadelphia. The design is exceptional, and the portraits are all crystal clear. This knife was obviously produced after the 1915 World Series as the Phillies are identified as "Nationals, Champions, 1915" and the Red Sox are identified as "Red Sox, World Champions, 1915." In the early teens, several different designs of souvenir baseball knives were produced. All are extremely rare. Often they have significant condition problems, due to moisture (which can seriously affect the quality of the images) but that is not the case with this extraordinary example. It has been perfectly preserved and the images are flawless. This is a incredibly rare knife. In fact, this is the first example of this design that we have ever offered. These celluloid baseball knives are special and in our opinion have yet really to be discovered by advanced collectors (probably simply because they are so rare to find they are almost impossible to collect). This is a beautifully produced and extremely high quality baseball celluloid item that would be a prize in many different types of collections, and in our opinion would be particularly at home in an extremely advanced baseball celluloid collection (of pinbacks and similar items). Celluloid and metal construction. Length: 3.25 inches. Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,115.00
