1920 Babe Ruth Headin' Home Movie Advertising Cards - Complete Set of Four

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,645.00

This extremely rare set of four advertising cards was issued directly to movie theater operators in 1920 to promote the release of Babe Ruth’s screen debut in Headin' Home . Measuring an impressive 4.5 x 5.5 inches, each card is printed in a single color on card stock. One card features Ruth’s hands, one his feet, another Ruth’s bat, and the key card features Ruth at bat with an invitation for the theater owner to contact the E.L.C. Company regarding dates and engagements for the film's upcoming release. All materials relating to Headin' Home are extremely rare. These are the only examples of this promotional card set known to exist. This set (we believe it is reasonable to assume that this is, in fact, a complete set) was discovered, perfectly preserved, tucked in the center of a press book for the 1920 movie. The press book was also distributed only to movie theater owners, and detailed the various promotional support available to theaters including providing illustrations of posters and lobby cards. There is no doubt that the fact that this set was issued only to movie theater owners is the reason for its extreme rarity. Not only is this the only set known (not even a single additional card has ever been seen) but the very substantial Headin' Home press book which once accompanied the set (in which the cards were perfectly preserved) is, to the best of our knowledge, the only example known. The card featuring Ruth’s hands has a couple of very light purple ink fingerprint marks from handling, otherwise all four cards are in bright, crisp pristine Near Mint to Mint condition. Disclosure per section 13 of REA's terms and conditions: This lot has been consigned from the personal collection of an executive or employee of Robert Edward Auctions (or a relative of an executive or employee). Very difficult to value, as these are the only examples known, but not difficult to appreciate both for their rarity, design, specific intended advertising purpose, and pristine condition. Total: 4 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,645.00
