Circa 1928 Babe Ruth & Red Grange Dolls (2)
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,175.00
The 1920s witnessed the emergence of two of the greatest sports heroes in history: baseball's immortal "Sultan of Swat," Babe Ruth, and football's legendary "Galloping Ghost," Red Grange. The popularity of the two stars did not go unnoticed by executives of the Sterling Doll Company, and near the end of the decade the company capitalized on their fame by issuing dolls in each player's likeness. Offered here is a set (and the first pair we have ever had) of these rare personality dolls manufactured by Sterling in the late 1920s: both a Babe Ruth doll and Red Grange doll. Each of these dolls is not only rare, but particularly exceptional in terms of condition. The dolls feature a composite head, hands, and feet, and are complete with their original cloth uniforms, including baseball cap and football helmet, respectively. The Ruth doll exhibits minor crazing and a few slight chips to the head and hands, and is in overall Excellent condition. The Grange doll displays only the slightest hint of crazing to the head and hands and is in spectacular Excellent to Mint condition. An original and quite rare 1920s Red Grange souvenir pinback (1.75 inches in diameter) is pinned to Grange's uniform. Interestingly, the Grange doll is accompanied by a second-place prize ribbon awarded by the United Federation of Doll Clubs at its 43rd Annual Exhibit held in San Francisco in 1992. Both dolls stand 29 inches in height and come with a custom-made metal stand for optimal display and presentation. These dolls are very unique and interesting. Occasionally, over the years, we have seen a Ruth or a Grange, but never both at the same time, or in such outstanding condition. Total: 2 dolls. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,175.00
