1927-1944 Babe Ruth Original News Photo Collection (9)

Collection of nine original Babe Ruth news photos, the majority of which date from his post-playing career. This is an amazing group of Ruth photos, each with special merit. The photos capture Ruth both on and off the field, and each features the original news caption affixed to the reverse. 1) March 1927: Ruth is pictured signing his new three-year contract, worth $210,000, as Ed Barrow and Jacob Ruppert look on. Photogram, 7.5 x 5.5 inches. 2) 2/28/35: Ruth is pictured arriving in Boston to sign his contract with the Boston Braves. International News Photo, 8.5 x 6.75 inches 3) Undated: close up picture of Ruth’s batting grip. International News Photo, 7 x 5 inches. 4) 1/30/42: Ruth pictured packing his things as he prepares to go to Hollywood to star in The Pride of the Yankees . International News Photo, 6.5 x 8.5 inches. 5) 8/21/42: Ruth pictured on the field prior to a batting exhibition against Walter Johnson as part of an Army-Navy Relief Benefit. International News Photo, 8.5 x 6.5 inches. 6) 7/28/43: Ruth donning his uniform prior to managing a team of Major League players in a benefit game against the North Carolina Pre Flight Cloudbusters. United Press International, 6.5 x 8.5 inches. 8) 8/26/43: Ruth posing with a team of former all-star players, including Wagner, Johnson, Collins, Mack, Bresnanhan, and Sisler, prior to a war bond benefit game. Acme Newspictures, 8 x 6.25 inches. 9) 1944 (no date given): Ruth pictured going door-to-door as a Red Cross block canvasser (the text on the back states that this was Ruth’s “reply to the report that Japs in New Guinea charged marine lines shouting ‘to hell with Babe Ruth’”). International News Photo, 8 x 10 inches (this photo originates from the archives of Baseball Magazine ). Also included are three additional photos. The first is an original 1942 movie-studio publicity shot (7 x 9.25 inches) of Ruth posing with child actor Douglas Croft on the set of The Pride of the Yankees . The second is a Prentice-Hall publicity photo (10 x 8.25 inches) of Ruth posing with kids at a hospital issued in promotion of the book, The Babe and I , written by Mrs. Ruth. The final photo is a non-vintage print (5 x 7 inches) picturing Ruth late in life. The photos are in Very Good condition overall and display flaws common to vintage news service photos including, but not limited to, minor creasing, border tears, editorial outlining, and tack holes.
