Bill Sweeney Pacific Coast League (PCL) Memorabilia Collection
Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $1,645.00
This large collection of photos, signed baseballs and scrapbook albums chronicle the professional baseball career of former Major League player and Pacific Coast League (PCL) manager Bill Sweeney. Sweeney played for both the Tigers (1928) and Red Sox (1930 and 1931) before embarking on a long coaching career in the PCL (interrupted by a brief coaching stint with the Tigers in 1947 and 1948). While a number of photos and newspaper articles date from Sweeney's active playing career, the majority of items offered here relate to Sweeney's managerial tenure in the PCL (1930s and 1940s). This material obviously once belonged to Sweeney. Album Photos (205 total) . The earliest photos in the collection, all of which are mounted (by means of adhesive) to black album pages, date between the years 1927 and 1933. All of the photos are snapshots, measuring approximately 2.5 x 4 inches, and include baseball photos as well as family and vacation photos. Of the 205 photos in the album, thirty-five are baseball related and include images of a number of Hall of Fame players, both in and out of uniform, as well as notable stars from the era. Included are individual photos Lefty Grove, Harry Heilmann, Bill Dickey, Charlie Gehringer, Art Shires, Al Schacht, Nick Altrock, Wally Schang, Early Whitehill, Bing Miller, Rube Walberg, and Lefty O'Doul. Nearly all of the photos bear the handwritten date and name of the person pictured on the front. Loose Photos (42 total). All of the loose photos measure approximately 8 x 10 inches (a few smaller) and date from Sweeney's PCL and Major League coaching career. Sweeney managed both the Hollywood Stars and Los Angeles Angels, so it is no surprise that many of the photos picture Hollywood celebrities taking part in baseball related festivities. Included here are photos of Abbot and Costello, Burns and Allen, George Raft, William Frawley ("Fred Mertz"), Gail Patrick, Robert Taylor, and Joe. E. Brown. Most of the photos include Sweeney, but a few also picture other players and teams from the era. Two of the photos are inscribed by Sweeney to his wife Helen. The photos are in Excellent condition overall. Balls (7 total). Seven balls, five of which are team signed: 1952 Seattle Raniers, 1953 Seattle Raniers, Portland Beavers (year unknown), and two unidentified teams. The three identified team balls are each in Excellent to Mint condition and feature blue ink signatures averaging "9." The other two team balls are in lesser condition, with faded signatures. One of the remaining balls is signed by Sweeney, Lon Warneke, and two others (illegible), while the other ball is signed by someone named "Farrell" (first name illegible). Both of the balls are in Very Good condition. Scrapbooks. Enormous collection of hundreds of newspaper clippings relating to Sweeney's baseball career (in two scrapbooks) . All have been mounted upon album pages. While a small number of articles chronicle his active playing career, the vast majority date from his PCL managerial career. Excellent condition overall. Miscellaneous. 1) Original artwork (charcoal on paper, 7.5 x 9 inches) of Bill Sweeney. Signed by the artist ("Lewis"). Matted and framed to total dimensions of 11.5 x 13.5 inches. 2) 1954 N.A.P.B.L. Convention jackknife and tool set housed in its original case (4.5 x 3 inches). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,645.00
