1938 Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio World Series News Photo
Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $1,527.50
This original news photo captures Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio spending a few minutes with “hizzoner,” New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, prior to Game 2 of the 1938 World Series at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Gehrig and DiMaggio are pictured standing along the grandstand as LaGuardia offers a few words of encouragement to his two hometown stars. An International News Photos stamp appears on the reverse, as does the date stamp “Oct 6 1938.” An additional stamp on the reverse reads, “Return to Look Library.” Whatever LaGuardia said to DiMaggio certainly paid off, as the “Yankee Clipper” went 2-4 with a home run and two RBI in the Yankees 6-3 win over the Cubs that afternoon. The “Bronx Bombers” went on to sweep the Cubs in the Series, winning their third, of an eventual four, consecutive World Championships. The photo (8.5 x 6.5 inches) displays a few light creases, primarily along the border areas, and is in Excellent condition overall. This is an outstanding original news service photo dating from Gehrig’s final World Series with the Yankees. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
