Circa late 1920s Rogers Hornsby Store-Model Glove in Original Box
Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $705.00
Rogers Hornsby was one of the greatest hitters in baseball history, so it's no surprise that the Wilson-Western Sporting Goods Company chose to use a photo of him swinging a bat to adorn the box cover for its Rogers Hornsby Model 970 right-handed fielder's glove. The large full-body image pictures Hornsby in his follow-through swing amid the caption "Rajah Hornsby - Champion Batsman Model - It's a Wilson." The front apron of the box features the same caption as well as small portrait image of Hornsby and the model number. The actual glove is included and displays the name "Rajah Hornsby - Champion Batsman" stamped on the front thumb. The model number and company name ("Wilson-Western Sporting Goods Co.") are stamped in the pocket. While the exact manufacturing period for this glove is unknown, it must date prior to 1931, for it was in that year that the Wilson-Western Sporting Goods Company officially changed its name to the Wilson Sporting Goods Company. The fact that this box and glove date to such an early period makes them all the more extraordinary. Glove boxes tend not to survive, naturally, as they were not intended to be saved. This particular example is in remarkable condition given its age and fragile nature. The colorful paper label covering the entire top and side of the box is completely intact. The box displays a few very small light stains, as well as a number of minor creases and abrasions, and there is separation along one of the flap corners on the lid. Though technically in Very Good condition, it presents at a much higher level and is one of the most eye-catching retail display boxes we have ever seen. The glove displays moderate use and is in Very Good condition. This is the first example of this rare, early Hornsby box design that we have seen. This struck us as a very unlikely item to be consigned by a noncollector who happened to come upon it while antiquing in the state of Iowa, but that is exactly how and where this extremely rare boxed glove surfaced. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $705.00
