1950s Nellie Fox "Favorite" Chewing Tobacco Retail Display
Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $822.50
Extremely rare 1950s retail counter display featuring Nellie Fox in promotion of "Favorite" chewing tobacco. Included with the counter display is an unopened pack of "Favorite" tobacco (which originally sat in the display and was offered as a free sample) and two identical twenty-two page memo books advertising "Favorite" tobacco. The colorful die-cut cardboard display pictures a profile image of Fox, sporting a large wad of tobacco in his cheek, while the bold text proclaims: "Nellie Fox says 'Favorite is the chewing tobacco I use and recommend to you!'" The self-standing counter display was designed to hold free samples of "Favorite" chewing tobacco. The free sample package included also bears Fox's likeness and refers to him as "Mr. Chewing Tobacco." Both the free sample package and the counter display note that "You Can Taste the Quality!" The cover of each memo book (distributed free to customers) is similar in design to the front of the tobacco package. The interior features not only lined pages for notes, but also portrait images, brief biographies, and glowing testimonials for "Favorite" tobacco from fifteen professional athletes, including Fox, Luis Aparicio, Ralph Houk, Harvey Kuenn, Bill Mazeroski, Norm Van Broklin, and Alex Webster. While examples of the original tobacco packages bearing Fox's likeness have occasionally circulated through the hobby over the years, the Nellie Fox "Favorite" tobacco retail display is very rarely seen. The display (7 L x 3.75 D x 10.5 H inches) is in remarkable condition given its age and fragile nature, let alone its intended use. Aside from a few tiny creases along each side of the base and the bottom edge of the top border, the piece remains in virtually the same state as it did when originally issued and sat on the store counter. Excellent to Mint condition. The sample pack of tobacco (4 x 5.5 inches) is in Very Good condition. One memo book (each 3 x 5 inches) is in Excellent to Mint condition, while the other (Vg) displays a few light stains on the cover, minor creasing on the back cover, and a pencil notation on one of the pages. Disclosure per section 13 of REA's terms and conditions: This lot has been consigned from the personal collection of an executive or employee of Robert Edward Auctions (or a relative of an executive or employee). Total 4 items (one counter display, one unopened tobacco pack, and two promotional memo books). Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $822.50
