1961 Roger Maris Mint-in-Box Spalding Baseball Glove
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $940.00
Roger Maris' fame today is centered around his historic 1961 season, but many people forget that he was the reigning American League MVP heading into that year. Therefore, it's no surprise that the A. G. Spalding & Bros. Company sought to capitalize on his star status prior to the 1961 season by producing a glove bearing his endorsement. Offered here is a pristine example of that rare model. The Spalding model "42-137" right-handed fielder's glove features Maris' facsimile on the front pinky and remains in Near Mint to Mint condition. The glove has never been used and the leather remains soft and supple. All of the lacing is intact and the glove appears much as it did when first produced. Ideally, the glove is housed in its original retail box that features a portrait image of Maris on the front panel. The box (9 x 6 x 8.5 inches) is in remarkable condition given its age and fragile nature. There is a slight separation along the flap of the top lid and the edges display light wear. A few minor creases are visible along each of the four sides. While technically in Very Good condition, the box projects an overall Excellent appearance and remains in about as fine a condition as one could hope for. The original price tag ($4.44), from Slater's Department Store, appears on the top lid. This is an extremely rare glove and box. An examination of Spalding catalogs from the era indicates that this particular glove was only offered in 1961, making this an exceptional Maris retail display piece issued during the most memorable season of his career. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $940.00
