1898 Cameo Pepsin Gum Cap Anson Pin
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $1,997.50
1898 Cameo Pepsin Gum pin of Hall of Famer Cap Anson, one of the nineteenth century's greatest stars, featuring him with the Chicago Colts. This is a newly discovered Cameo pin example of Anson, one of only three examples that we have ever seen or heard of (one of which is severely cracked). All Cameo Pepsins are extremely rare but Cap Anson, naturally, is one of the key Hall of Famers in the set. When this pin came out he was the grand old man of the game and widely considered the most important player of the entire ninteenth century. This is an outstanding example, with a very sharp portrait. The pin does have a few minor spots of foxing, primarily along the extreme perimeter, which are not terribly distracting, and is otherwise in Nr/Mt condition. The reverse Whitehead & Hoag advertising back paper is perfectly clean and intact. Much rarer than their "card counterparts," key player Cameo Pepsin gum pins such as this prize example are so rarely offered that there is no consensus of value. A case can easily be made that they represent a far better value than ninteenth-century baseball cards of the same players. Incredibly, this pin is actually as rare as the famous N172 Old Judge Cap Anson in uniform. Cap Anson's Cameo Gum pin set will always be one of the most highly regarded nineteenth-century baseball pins. This is a very important and extraordinary rarity. Diameter: 1.25 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,997.50
