1898 Cameo Pepsin Gum Pin Collection (21) Including Seven Newly Discovered Checklist Additions!

Starting Bid - $2,500.00 , Sold For - $5,875.00

1898 Cameo Pepsin Gum pin collection of twenty-one different (out of the 107 subjects known to date in the set) including seven newly discovered examples which have never been seen and are not listed in the 2007 Standard Catalog checklist. Cameo Pepsin Gum pins have a special place in the world of baseball collecting. In addition to being the very first celluloid baseball pin set, this set represents the only significant issue of any type dating from the late 1890s, featuring over one hundred known players (with additional new discoveries no doubt yet to be documented), including many players which appear in no other set. Pepsin Gum pins are as significant to baseball in the late 1890s as E107s are in documenting the players of the first few years of the twentieth century. Cameo Pepsin Gum pins are, in fact, considerably rarer than even E107s, yet have received far less attention from advanced collectors, primarily because they are so rare that few have ever even considered attempting to collect the set. This collection of twenty-one pins is part of an exciting new find of thirty-four Cameo Pepsin Gum pins which was recently discovered in a New Jersey family estate. (The other thirteen pins from this find are offered in separate lots in this auction.) The condition ranges from Vg to Ex-Mt. A few have a little foxing, and with all but one having the original advertising back paper complete and intact. The images of approximately half of the pins are a little light, depending on what team the player is on. (The images of players from certain teams, such as Baltimore, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, and Brooklyn, are always lighter than images of players from some other teams, such as Chicago, Cincinnati, and Boston.) About half are in Excellent or better condition; the other half are in technically lesser condition, mostly due to foxing (as noted individually in the following listing) but display just as well. This is a great-looking group. Organized by team, the collection is comprised of the following: Baltimore (1 pin): Stentzel. Brooklyn (3 pins): Canavan (newly discovered, a hint of pinpoint foxing along perimeter), Grim (newly discovered), and Payne (newly discovered). Boston (1 pin): Mains (a hint of foxing, strong image!). Chicago (3 pins): Everett (newly discovered), Ryan (spots of foxing), and Terry (newly discovered). Cincinnati (5 pins): Brown (pin is yellowed/toned), Dwyer (newly discovered), Peitz (chipping/scrape to celluloid at 3:00), Schreiver (Schriver), and Vaughn. Indianapolis (4 pins): Gray, Hogreiver (newly discovered), Motz, and Watkins. Milwaukee (1 pin): Weaver. Pittsburg (2 pins): Goar (a few unobtrusive scratches which are not distracting can be seen upon close examination) and Lyons (slightly off-center, great image). Toronto (1 pin): 1897 Toronto B.B Club (image is a little light; the back paper is perfectly clean and intact, Ex-Mt condition). Cameo Pepsin Gum pins are among the rarest and most significant of all baseball pinbacks. This unique offering is one of the largest and, with seven newly discovered checklist additions, one of the most important collections of this rare issue to ever surface. Total 21 pins. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $5,875.00
