1923 Cleveland Indians Team Panorama with Speaker, Coveleski, and Sewell
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,527.50
This striking panoramic photograph captures twenty-nine members of the 1923 Cleveland Indians posing together shoulder-to-shoulder in front of the grandstands at League Park. Included here are Hall of Famers Tris Speaker (player/manager), Stan Coveleski, and Joe Sewell, as well as Bill Wambsganss (he made the only unassisted triple play in World Series history), Elmer Smith (he hit the first grand slam in World Series history), George Uhle (led the American League in wins in 1923), Homer Summa, Frank Brower, Rube Lutzke, Charlie Jamieson, Steve O'Neill, Riggs Stephenson, Joe Shaute, and Luke Sewell (Joe's brother). Each player is identified in white lettering directly below his respective image. The white-lettered caption along the top border reads "The Cleveland Baseball Club - American League - Season 1923." The photographer's credit, "S. A. Morrick," appears in the lower right corner. This is a very rare and substantial early panorama photograph. These display photos were distributed as keepsakes to players on the team and it is very likely that this example originates directly from one of the players in this photo. This example has outstanding clarity and superb contrast. The photo (29.5 x 7.25 inches) has a few light vertical creases extending from both the top and bottom borders (not uncommon with panoramas, which were often rolled up) and a small area of extremely light toning in the left quadrant. Two tiny abrasions are also evident, one of which touches upon the image of pitcher Phil Bedgood. While technically in Very Good to Excellent condition, most of the aforementioned minor flaws are relegated to the perimeter areas and the display photo still has on overall Excellent appearance. Framed to total dimensions of 31 x 8.75 inches. Disclosure per section 13 of REA's terms and conditions: This lot has been consigned from the personal collection of an executive or employee of Robert Edward Auctions (or a relative of an executive or employee). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
