1946 Ed Kearse Oakland Oaks Game-Used PCL Jersey
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,115.00
Rare Pacific Coast League jersey worn by catcher Ed Kearse while a member of the Oakland Oaks, circa 1946. The white flannel jersey features the Oaks' stylized insignia on the left breast and the number "22" on the reverse. Both the logo and number have been appliquéd in red on blue felt. A "Wilson" label and an adjacent "46" size tag appear in the collar. Original and unaltered, the jersey displays moderate wear including the loss of four buttons and a stain on the back of the left sleeve. Ed Kearse was a World War II veteran whose brief Major League career was limited to just eleven games with the New York Yankees in 1942. He was no stranger to the PCL, however, as he played with both Seattle (in the early 1940s) and later the Oaks (1945 and 1946). This jersey most likely dates to Kearse's 1946 season with the club due to the absence of a war patch on the sleeve. (Kearse wore number "22" in both seasons with the Oaks.) The Oakland Oaks were charter members of the PCL in 1903 and the franchise remained in the league through 1955. Over the years the Oaks roster featured many former and future Major League stars including Casey Stengel (manager 1946-1948), Vince DiMaggio, Billy Herman, Ernie Lombardi, Billy Martin, Mel Ott, Jackie Jensen, and Cookie Lavagetto, to name just a few. This is an outstanding and rare jersey from one of the most important franchises in PCL history. Graded A9 by MEARS (10 point base grade, with a half point subtracted for the missing buttons and another half point deducted for the stain). This jersey has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,115.00
