Circa 1950 Ralph "Putsy" Caballero Philadelphia Phillies Warm-Up Jacket
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For -
Philadelphia Phillies team jacket worn by third baseman Ralph "Putsy" Caballero during the late 1940s or early 1950s. Major League team jackets from any era, especially those dating from the 1950s or earlier, are exceedingly rare. This particular jacket is no exception and, ideally, is accompanied by the ironclad provenance of having been consigned to this auction directly by "Putsy" Caballero. The red, heavy cotton jacket features a zipper front and two leather-trimmed side pockets. A large "P" is appliquéd on the left breast in red on white felt. Located in the collar are a "Wilson" label and a "44" size tag. The jacket is completely original, with no alterations, and displays excessive wear, including fading and moderate soiling. The amount of wear displayed here probably indicates that it was worn by Caballero for a number of seasons. Each of the pockets is torn and much of the leather trim is either cracked or missing. The zipper is no longer functional. Caballero first joined the Phillies in 1944 at the age of sixteen, but saw limited action his first few seasons. In 1948 he became the club's starting third baseman and was later a member of the famed 1950 "Whiz Kids." Caballero retired after the 1952 season with a .228 lifetime average. The jacket has been evaluated by MEARS and is deemed "Authentic" (MEARS doesn't grade jackets). LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR
