1959-1960 Ted Kluszewski Chicago White Sox Game-Used Road Jersey

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $3,525.00

Chicago White Sox road jersey worn by famed slugger Ted Kluszewski during both the 1959 and 1960 seasons. Graded A8 by MEARS. All 1950s flannels are rare and desirable but a jersey from a feared slugger and fan favorite such as Kluszewski is a special prize. The gray flannel jersey is lettered "Chicago" across the front and features the number "8" on the reverse. "Kluszewski" is lettered on the reverse above the number. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in black cotton twill. The name "Kluszewski" is chain-stitched in black upon a gray strip tag located in the collar. Also in the collar, directly to the right of the name, is the black-marker notation "1-59." Situated on the left front tail are a "Wilson" label, an adjacent "48" size tag, and a laundry tag. The year ("1959") and the number four ("4") are chain-stitched in black upon a gray strip tag located directly below the laundry tag. Ted Kluszewski was traded from the Pirates to the White Sox in midseason of 1959. This jersey was issued to Kluszewski in 1959 but it was worn by him the following year as well, as evidenced by his name on the reverse. The White Sox did not place player names on their jerseys in 1959, but they did in 1960. The fact that this jersey is tagged for 1959, but also features Kluszewski's name on the back, indicates that it was worn by him in both seasons. Aside from the addition of the name on the reverse, which was executed by the team, the jersey is completely original, with no alterations. Moderate wear is displayed throughout. Kluszewski was one of the most formidable sluggers of his era. Known as one of the strongest players in baseball history, "Big Klu" hit forty or more home runs on three separate occasions, including a career-high total of 49 in 1954. Kluszewski appeared in thirty-one games with Chicago in 1959, batting .297 with 2 home runs and 10 RBI. The following year, which was the penultimate season of his career, he appeared in eighty-one games, batting .293 with 5 home runs and 35 RBI. He finished his career with 279 home runs, 1,028 RBI, and a .298 lifetime average. Graded A8 by MEARS (10 point base grade, with 2 points subtracted for the team-sanctioned addition of the name on the reverse). This is one of only two Kluszewski jerseys listed in the MEARS population report. This jersey has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $3,525.00
