1969 Orlando Cepeda Atlanta Braves Signed Game-Used Road Jersey

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $7,050.00

Atlanta Braves road jersey worn by Hall of Fame first baseman Orlando Cepeda in 1969. Outstanding game-used jersey from one of the great sluggers of his era. Graded A9.5 by MEARS. The gray flannel jersey is lettered "Braves" across the front and features the number "30" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in navy on red tackle twill. An Atlanta Braves "Screaming Indian" patch appears on the left sleeve, and a Major League Baseball "100th Anniversary" patch appears on the right sleeve. The uniform number, size, and year ("30 44 69") are chain-stitched in blue upon a gray strip tag in the collar. Located on the left front tail are a "Spalding" label, a "44" size tag, a laundry tag, and an adjacent strip tag reading "Set 1 1969." Cepeda has signed the jersey in black marker (grading "9") on the reverse, directly above the number. The original "100th Anniversary" patch on the right sleeve was removed and subsequently replaced with another authentic patch. Aside from that minor alteration, the jersey is completely original and displays moderate wear. In 1961 Cepeda hit 142 RBIs and batted .311 while leading the National League with 46 homers. In 1962, with 35 home runs, he was one of the key players that helped lead the Giants to the pennant. 1969 was Cepeda's first season with the Braves and although he was in the twilight of his career, he was still a feared slugger. Cepeda hit 22 home runs and drove in 88 runs to help the Braves capture their first division title in franchise history (1969 was the first year of League divisions). Cepeda retired in 1974 with 379 home runs, 1,365 RBI and a .297 lifetime average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1999. Graded A9.5 by MEARS (10 point base grade with a half point deducted for the removal of the original "100th Anniversary" patch). This is currently the only Orlando Cepeda jersey and one of two 1969 Atlanta Braves jerseys listed in the MEARS population report. (The other jersey, which grades A10, is also featured in this auction.) This jersey has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $7,050.00
