1979 Ozzie Smith San Diego Padres Signed Game-Used Road Jersey - Highest-Graded Example

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $5,581.25

Rare San Diego Padres road jersey worn by Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith in 1979. Graded A10 by MEARS, with no other Ozzie Smith jerseys graded at this level. This is an outstanding Ozzie Smith jersey, the only Ozzie Smith jersey of this ideal quality ever examined by MEARS, and dating from very early in his career. The brown knit jersey is lettered "San Diego" across the front and features the number "1" on the left breast and reverse. "Smith" is lettered on the reverse above the number. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in gold on white tackle twill, with the exception of the name on back, which is appliquéd in gold tackle twill. Both the uniform number and year ("1 79") are chain-stitched in white upon a brown strip tag on the left front tail, directly below which is a "Wilson 40" label. Signed by Smith in black marker (grading "9") on the reverse numeral "1." Original and unaltered, the jersey displays moderate wear. 1979 marked Ozzie Smith's second full season in the Majors, and even at that early stage of his career it was obvious that he was a magician with the glove. Smith was a human-highlight machine in the field and today is considered by many to be the finest fielding shortstop in history. In his nineteen seasons he led the League in fielding percentage at his position seven times and garnered thirteen consecutive Gold Glove Awards between the years 1980 and 1992. A fifteen-time All-Star, Smith was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2002. Graded A10 by MEARS. Surprisingly, this is an extremely scarce modern-era Hall of Fame jersey. Aside from this example, only two other Smith jerseys are listed in the entire MEARS population report: a 1991 Cardinals jersey (A5) and a 1996 Cardinals jersey (A4). This jersey has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticator David Bushing. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $5,581.25
