1982 Kirk Gibson Detroit Tigers Game-Used Road Jersey
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,527.50
Detroit Tigers road jersey worn by outfielder Kirk Gibson in 1982. Graded A9 by MEARS. The gray knit jersey is lettered "Detroit" across the front and features the number "2" on the reverse. "Gibson" is lettered on the reverse above the name. All front letters and numerals are appliqued in navy on orange tackle twill. All reverse letters are appliqued in navy tackle twill. Both the year and set number ("82 1"), as well as a team inventory code ("33") are chain-stitched in blue upon separate gray strip tags on the left front tail. Also situated on the left front tail is a "Wilson 44" label. Following the 1984 season this jersey was subsequently used by one of the Tigers' minor league clubs, at which time Gibson's name on the reverse was covered by a nameplate. That nameplate has since been removed, leaving a stitch outline of its former location. Otherwise, the jersey is completely original with no other alterations. Moderate-to-heavy wear is displayed throughout. Gibson was hampered by a wrist injury in 1982 and only appeared in sixty-nine games. Despite the handicap, he still managed to hit 8 home runs and drive in 35 runs. Although he enjoyed a fine sixteen-year career, Gibson will always be remembered for his dramatic pinch-hit game-winning home run in the first game of the 1988 World Series that helped propel the Dodgers to an improbable Series victory over the heavily favored A's. Graded A9 by MEARS (10 point base grade, with 1 point deducted for the addition/removal of the minor-league nameplate). One of only two Kirk Gibson jerseys listed in the MEARS population report, it represents the highest-graded example (the other is A5). This jersey has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
