1991 George Brett Kansas City Royals Uniform (Pants and Jersey)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $5,875.00
Complete Kansas City Royals uniform (pants and jersey) issued to George Brett in 1991. Graded A8 by MEARS. The blue knit jersey is lettered "Royals" across the front and features the number "5" on the left breast and reverse. "Brett" is lettered on the reverse above the number. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in white tackle twill. A Royals team patch appears on the left sleeve. Located on the left front tail are a "Rawlings 44" label and an adjacent flag tag reading "Set 2 1991." The matching pants have a "Rawlings 34" label in the waistband as well as a flag tag reading "Set 2 1991." Also displayed in the waistband, stitched in blue upon a white strip tag, are the year, pant size, inseam, and uniform number ("91 34 28 5.") Both the jersey and pants are original and unaltered, and display light wear. George Brett was one of the greatest hitters of his era. Beginning in 1975, Brett batted over .300 on eleven separate occasions, including league-leading totals of .333 in 1976, .390 in 1980, and .329 in 1990. Hampered by a knee injury in 1991, Brett only appeared in 128 games. The injury obviously affected his performance at the plate, as he finished the season with 10 home runs, 65 RBI, and a .255 batting average. Brett retired two years later with a .305 average, 3,154 hits, 317 home runs, and 1,595 RBI. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 in his first year of eligibility. This is a perfect George Brett jersey with matching pants. The jersey is graded A8 by MEARS. Ordinarily no post-1987 jersey can achieve a higher grade than A5 without additional provenance, but MEARS may award up to three additional points based on a preponderance of evidence relating to both the jersey, its ideal player-related characteristics, and survival as a complete uniform with matching pants. In this case, MEARS has awarded this jersey the maximum three additional points. Obviously, this is a spectacular Brett uniform. It is also the only complete George Brett uniform (jersey and matching pants) we have seen, and one of only three George Brett jerseys listed in the MEARS census to grade A8 or better. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $5,875.00
