1921-1932 George Kelly Pro-Model Bat

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $4,406.25

George Kelly H&B signature model bat (predating model numbers) from the 1921-1931 manufacturing period. Graded A7 by MEARS; only one graded at this level, with two graded higher. The bat displays heavy use along its entire length including cleat marks, a nine-inch crack in the handle, and moderate deadwood on back of the barrel. The crack in the handle was once repaired with a strip of tape, which has since been removed (the outline of the tape is still visible). This bat was originally returned to the H&B factory as evidenced by the side writing on the barrel. Unfortunately, all of the writing has faded beyond the point of legibility. Remnants of the original factory shipping label appear on the barrel. All of the manufacturer's stampings are deep and well defined. George "Highpockets" Kelly was one of the key members of the New York Giants 1921-1923 baseball dynasty, helping to lead the club to three pennants and two World Championships during that span. He was also one of the top fielding first basemen of the era, and he joined Frank Frisch, Dave Bancroft, and Heinie Groh in what many consider to be the best Giant infield of all time. Kelly batted over .300 for six consecutive seasons (1921-1926) and twice he hit three home runs in one game. He also knocked in 100 or more runs four years in a row, capped by a League- and career-high 136 in 1924. He finished his career with a .297 lifetime average, 148 home runs, and 1,020 RBI. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973. Length: 36 inches. Weight: 35.1 ounces. Graded A7 by MEARS (5 point base grade, plus 3 points for use and 1 point subtracted for the crack and the deadwood). This is one of only four George Kelly pro-model bats listed in the MEARS census. This bat has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $4,406.25
