1921-1931 Hazen "Ki Ki" Cuyler Pro-Model Bat

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $4,406.25

Hazen "Ki Ki" Cuyler H&B signature model bat (predating model numbers) from the 1921-1931 manufacturing period. Graded A8 by MEARS; only one graded at this level, with two graded higher. The bat displays heavy use along its entire length including cleat marks, grain swelling, and surface marks. Four nails have been applied, respectively, to both the front and reverse of the barrel. The handle features a light, black residue (does not appear to be pine tar) and a number of small, minor notches appear in the knob. Although Cuyler appeared briefly in a few Major League games between the years 1921 and 1923, he didn't break into the Pirates starting lineup until 1924. To say that Cuyler's rookie season was a memorable one is an understatement. His .354 batting average was not only the top mark on the team, but third best in the National League. The following season he batted .357, thus clearly establishing himself as one of the game's top hitters. Cuyler batted over .300 in seven of his first eight seasons, including a career high .360 in 1929, and finished his eighteen-year career with a .321 lifetime average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1968. Length: 35.75 inches. Weight: 32.8 ounces. Graded A8 by MEARS (5 point base grade plus 3 points for use). This is one of only three Ki Ki Cuyler 1920s era H&B bats listed in the MEARS census. This bat has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $4,406.25
