1938-1944 Mel Ott Pro-Model Bat
Starting Bid - $2,000.00 , Sold For - $19,975.00
Mel Ott H&B signature model bat (predating model numbers) from the 1934-1944 manufacturing period. Graded A8 by MEARS, one of four graded at this level, with only three graded higher. Mel Ott pro-model bats are the rarest of those belonging to members of baseball's famed 500 Home Run Club, an extremely popular area of collecting, and this particular bat is an exceptional example. The bat displays heavy use along its entire length including deeply embedded ball and stitch marks, green rack marks, cleat marks, and an unusual pattern of scoring along the handle. Additionally, a handle crack (of unspecified length) has been professionally restored. Ideally, subtle variations in the center brand allow us to more narrowly date the bat's period of manufacture to the years 1938 through 1943. Ott led the National League in home runs twice during that six-year span and six times total over the course of his twenty-two-year career. An eleven-time All-Star, Ott finished his career with a .304 lifetime average, 511 home runs, and 1,860 RBI. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1951. Length: 34.75 inches. Weight: 33.4 ounces. Graded A8 by MEARS (5 point base grade, plus 3 points for use). This bat has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000. SOLD FOR $19,975.00
