1960 Stan Musial Signed All-Star Game Bat - Possible Record #6 Lifetime All-Star Home Run Bat
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $5,581.25
This Adirondack block-letter (last name only) model bat (no model number is stamped on the bat) was issued to the legendary "Stan the Man" Musial for use in both 1960 All-Star Games. (Two All-Star Games were held annually between the years 1959 and 1962.) Musial holds the career record for most All-Star Game home runs. He hit his record sixth All-Star Game home run in 1960 in New York, very possibly with this very bat. "1960 All Stars" is stamped in block letters on the "sweet spot" of the barrel. Musial's uniform number ("6") is written on the knob in faded black marker. Musial has personally signed and inscribed the bat, "Stan Musial H. R. #6," in black Sharpie directly below the barrel stamping. The bat displays light use including rack marks. The light use is not surprising due to the fact that Musial only appeared as a pinch hitter in both 1960 All-Star Games, held, respectively, at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City and Yankee Stadium in New York. In the first game, at Kansas City, he singled, and in the second game, at Yankee Stadium, he hit his record sixth and final All-Star Game home run. Although it is impossible to know for certain whether or not this is the bat used by Musial while hitting that historic home run, the odds are very good, especially given the fact that he made note of it in his inscription. Participating players were normally issued only two specially produced All-Star Game bats, therefore even if the bat were not so inscribed by Musial, there would exist a fifty percent chance he used this bat during the second All-Star Game. Musial was selected to the All-Star Game in twenty of his twenty-two seasons and is the holder of four All-Star Game batting records: home runs (6), total bases (40, tied with Willie Mays), pinch hits (3), and extra base hits (8, tied with Willie Mays). All-Star Game and World Series bats have always been highly prized by collectors due to their rarity (like All-Star Game bats, only two World Series bats were issued to each participating player) and date-specific provenance. This is an exceptional Musial All-Star in all regards, dating from the occasion of his final, record-setting, All-Star Game home run. Length: 34.37 inches. Weight: 30.7 ounces. Graded A9 by MEARS (5 point base grade, with 1 point added for use, 1 point added for the uniform number on the knob, and 2 points added for its specific-event use). LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4000. SOLD FOR $5,581.25
