1960-1964 Eddie Mathews Signed Pro-Model Bat
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $4,700.00
Eddie Mathews H&B signature model "S2" bat dating from the 1960-1964 manufacturing period. Mathews averaged over thirty home runs each year from 1960 to 1964, enroute to hitting over 500 home runs in his seventeen-year career. Some of them may have been hit with this very bat. The bat displays heavy use, including ball marks, cleat marks and moderate deadwood on the back of the barrel. Approximately sixty percent of the knob has been chipped away and the bat has lost much of its original finish. Mathews has personally attested to the bat's provenance by inscribing it "My Gamer - Eddie Mathews" in black marker (grading "9/10") on the sweet spot. Mathews was one of the greatest power hitters of his era. During the 1950s and early 1960s he combined with Hank Aaron to form one of the greatest slugger tandems in the history of the game. Mathews helped lead Milwaukee to two pennants and one World Championship during his fifteen years with the club. A member of baseball's elite "500 Home Run Club," Mathews finished his career with 512 home runs, 1,453 RBI, and a .271 lifetime average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1978. Length: 34.75 inches. Weight: 31.1. Graded A8 by MEARS (5 point base grade, plus 3 point for use and another 2 points for the inscription on the barrel, but minus 1.5 points combined for the knob chips and deadwood, and a half point for the loss of finish). This is one of just eight 1960-1964 Eddie Mathews H&B bat listed in the MEARS census, with one other at this level, and three graded higher. This bat has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $4,700.00
