1961-1964 Al Kaline Signed Pro-Model Bat
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $5,287.50
Al Kaline H&B signature model "P72L" bat dating from the 1961-1964 manufacturing period. Graded A8 by MEARS, one of three graded at this level, with only two graded higher. This bat originates from the personal collection of Bill Althaus, an award-winning sportswriter and columnist for The Examiner in Independence, Missouri. Althaus has provided a letter of authenticity (which accompanies the bat) that reads: "This Al Kaline bat was purchased from an autograph collection of a former Kansas City A's security guard. It is from the early 1960s, as he worked for the A's while they played at Municipal Stadium, and originates directly from the visitors' clubhouse." A piece of masking tape applied to the sweet spot bears the vintage ink notation "Detroit - Outfielder - 1963." Kaline has signed the bat in blue marker (grading "10") just to the right of the barrel stamping. Kaline's uniform number ("6") is written in black marker on the knob and the bat displays light use, including grain swelling, rack marks and trace evidence of ball marks. The date on the tape is confirmed by factory records, which report a shipment of "P72L" bats, matching this bat's specifications, to Kaline on 2/20/63. Kaline batted .312 with 27 home runs and 101 RBI in 1963. He finished his career with a .297 lifetime average and is one of only twenty-seven players to have amassed 3,000 or more hits. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1980, his first year of eligibility. Length: 34.5 inches. Weight: 30 ounces. Graded A8 by MEARS (base grade of 5, plus 1 point for use and 2 points for provenance). This bat has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $5,287.50
