1970-1971 Orlando Cepeda Pro-Model Bat
Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $822.50
Orlando Cepeda H&B signature model "C236" bat dating from the 1970-1971 manufacturing period. The bat displays heavy use along its entire length including ball marks, deeply embedded stitch marks, red rack marks, light pine tar residue on the handle, and minor grain separation along the back of the barrel. Factory records indicate that Cepeda only ordered model "C236" bats, matching this bat's precise specifications, in 1970 and 1971. Specifically, he ordered six bats on 9/23/70, nine bats on 4/6/71, and three bats on 5/27/71. One of the curious aspects of this bat is the fact that although it dates from the early 1970s, it was manufactured using an old 1965-1968 center brand (note: This is not a unique occurrence of this anomaly; other examples have been documented). Cepeda was a member of the Atlanta Braves in 1970 and 1971. He batted .305 with 34 home runs and a League-leading 111 RBI in 1970. The following year he missed nearly half the season due to a knee injury but still managed to hit 14 home runs and drive in 44 runs while batting .276. Nicknamed "The Baby Bull," Cepeda was one of the game's top sluggers during the 1960s and he retired in 1974 with 379 home runs, 1,365 RBI and a .297 lifetime average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1999. Graded A8 by MEARS (5 point base grade plus 3 points for use). This is one of only five Orlando Cepeda pro-model bats listed in the MEARS population report. This bat has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $822.50
