1965-1968 Roberto Clemente Pro-Model Bat

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $7,637.50

This Roberto Clemente H&B signature model "U1" bat was manufactured between the years 1965 and 1968, a time span that corresponds to one of the most prolific periods of Clemente's career. This is an outstanding game bat from one of the all-time greats whose fame transcends the world of baseball. The bat displays heavy use along its entire length including ball marks and deeply embedded stitch marks. Clemente's uniform number ("21") is written in faded black marker on the knob. There is evidence of the handle having once been wrapped with tape (the faint outline of the wrapping pattern is still visible) and it appears that a light layer of finish has been added to the barrel. The amount of use exhibited on the bat is not surprising, for Clemente was at the peak of his career during the four-year period 1965-1968. Clemente won two of his four batting titles in that span, as well as the MVP Award in 1966. A great humanitarian as well as an accomplished ballplayer, Clemente died tragically in a plane crash in 1972 while flying relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The following year he became the first Hispanic ballplayer elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame (the Hall waived its normal five-year waiting period in his honor). Length: 35.75 inches. Weight: 37.4 ounces. Graded A8.5 by MEARS (5 point base grade, plus 3 points for use, 1 point for the uniform number and minus a half point for the added finish). This bat has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat authenticator David Bushing. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $7,637.50
