1980 Steve Carlton Signed Pro-Model Bat

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,175.00

Steve Carlton Louisville Slugger block-letter (last name only) model "P89" bat dating from the Phillies 1980 World Championship season. Graded A9.5 by MEARS. Although the manufacturing period for this bat spans the years 1980 through 1983, the factory records more narrowly define its production date specifically to the year 1980. Carlton only received two orders of "P89" bats, matching this bat's specifications, during his career. The first order was shipped to him on 6/28/80, while the second was shipped on 7/3/80. The bat displays heavy use including ball marks, deeply embedded stitch marks, cleat marks, red rack marks, and pine tar on the handle. Carlton's uniform number ("32") is written on the knob in black marker. The bat is signed "Best Wishes Steve Carlton," in black marker (grading "9") on the barrel, directly below the barrel stamping. Carlton enjoyed one of the finest seasons of his career in 1980, leading the League in both wins (24) and strikeouts (286) while posting a 2.34 ERA. Those gaudy numbers later earned him his third Cy Young Award (of an eventual four) at season's end. Carlton was equally impressive in the postseason, winning one game in the NLCS and two games in the World Series to help lead the Phillies to their first World Championship in franchise history. He finished his career with 329 wins and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1994. Pitcher's bats, especially those of Hall of Famers, are particularly scarce. This is an exceptional Carlton pro-model bat in all respects, dating from one of the most important seasons of his career. Length: 34.75 inches. Weight: 33.3 ounces. Graded A9.5 by MEARS (5 point base grade plus 3 points for use, 1 point for the uniform number on the knob, and a half point for the year-specific factory record). This is one of only five Steve Carlton pro-model bats listed in the MEARS census. Two are graded at this level, with only one graded higher. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,175.00
