1908 T226 Red Sun Boxers Collection (17)

Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $3,231.25

Collection of seventeen extremely rare 1908 T226 Red Sun Pugilistic Subjects cards: Baldwin, Brown, Corbett, Cross, Goodman, Hyland, Jeffries, Ketchel, Lewis, Nelson, Papke, Stewart (2), E. Walsh, J. Walsh, Willetts, and Wolgast. This is an impressive group of these rare cards, including many keys to the set. The cards were preserved in an old scrapbook, and are presented still neatly mounted on a large removed scrapbook page (18 x 11 inches), along with sixteen 1910-era amateur boxing tickets. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, before the days of television, it was a very popular pastime for collectors to assemble albums in this fashion for display and enjoyment. Compared to baseball cards of the era, these early boxing cards (which are among the rarest of all early boxing cards) represent a particularly outstanding value. The cards display beautifully as is, but of course could be removed from the scrapbook page by a professional conservator if desired. Total 17 cards, presented on one side of a scrapbook leaf. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,231.25
