1957 Jim Brown Sport Magazine Award - "Top Performer in Pro-Football"

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,057.50

Jim Brown's 1957 rookie season with the Cleveland Browns was nothing less than spectacular. Brown led the NFL in rushing yards (942), rushing touchdowns (9), and rushing yards per game (78.5) in propelling the Browns to a 9-2-1 record and a first place finish in the Eastern Division. Not surprisingly, Sport Magazine named Brown its "Top Performer in Pro-Football" for the 1957 season. Offered here is the very award issued to Brown by Sport Magazine in commemoration of his outstanding season. The wooden display piece features a gilt-bordered plaque flanked on either side by an identical metal figural piece depicting an eagle perched on a pedestal. The plaque is engraved, "Sport Magazine Award - Top Performer In Pro-Football - 1957 - Jimmy Brown." This is one of the first major awards issued to Brown during his illustrious career. While the Sport Magazine award is not an official league presentation, there was no official league award of this type. In the 1950s, when Sport Magazine was very prominent, this was a particularly prestigious and significant award. Brown was also named the NFL Rookie of the Year in 1957 and later went on to win four MVP Awards. A copy of an old auction catalog description of this piece, which states that it was originally obtained directly from Jim Brown's son, accompanies. It is extremely rare to find anything of significance, especially in terms of awards, relating to Jim Brown's career. This is an outstanding and important award presented to the legendary Jim Brown, the greatest football player of all time, in honor of his rookie season. The wood backing (15 x 10 inches) displays a number of minor abrasions and/or chips and the plaque exhibits moderate surface wear including a few scratches. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
