1964-1966 Willie Wood Green Bay Packers Game-Used Home Jersey
Starting Bid - $2,500.00 , Sold For - $8,225.00
Rare Green Bay Packers home jersey worn by Hall of Fame safety Willie Wood during the mid 1960s. Graded a perfect A10 by MEARS. Wood jerseys are extremely rare. This is the only Willie Wood jersey listed in the entire MEARS population report. The green dureen jersey features the number "24" appliquéd in white twill on the front, back, and each sleeve. A "Sand-Knit 42" label is located on the left front tail. Original and unaltered, the jersey displays moderate-to-heavy use, including numerous contact marks and light discoloring of the cotton twill numbers. The left shoulder has two small tears and the yoke of the jersey is reinforced by an additional layer of white fabric. Both elbows are also reinforced. Ideally, prominent contact marks scattered over the entire garment offer tangible evidence of former game use, including yellow markings on the front number and left shoulder area. Willie Wood was the first African-American quarterback in the history of the PAC-10 Conference during his years at USC. Inexplicably, he was not selected by any team in the NFL draft and later signed with Green Bay as a free agent in 1960. The Packers moved Wood to safety and the position obviously suited him, as he was selected to the Pro Bowl eight times during the ten year span 1962-1971. He was also named All-Pro in each of those ten seasons and six times was selected to the All-NFL Team. Although the Packer offense usually garnered much of the accolades during the club's 1960s dynasty, Wood anchored one of the top defensive units in the league. Wood led the NFL with nine interceptions in 1962 and he finished his career with forty-eight interceptions. He also excelled on special teams, returning 187 punts for 1,391 yards and two touchdowns over the course of his twelve-year career. Wood helped lead the Packers to five NFL Championships and two Super Bowl victories during his storied career. In 1989 he received football's highest honor with his induction into the Football Hall of Fame. Graded A10 by MEARS. Green Bay Packers jerseys dating from the 1960s are quite scarce, especially those worn by prominent team members such as Wood. To date, only seven 1960s Packers jerseys are listed in the MEARS census. This is an extremely rare and desirable Hall of Famer game-used jersey dating from the height of the Packers' legendary football dynasty. This jersey has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticators David Bushing and/or Troy Kinunen. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+ SOLD FOR $8,225.00
