Jim Thorpe Signed Sheet

Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $1,057.50

Small, manill- colored sheet, signed in pencil by Jim Thorpe. The pencil notation "Clearfield, Pa" is written below Thorpe's name and the number "974" appears above it. Thorpe's signature, in any form, is both rare and desirable. The offered signature has been boldly scripted and grades "10." Ideally, it contrasts extremely well against the light colored surface and is exceptional for display. Jim Thorpe, a Native American, is one of the legendary sports figures of the twentieth century and is still considered by many to be the greatest athlete who ever lived. In addition to winning two gold medals at the 1912 Olympics, Thorpe also played professional football and baseball at the Major League levels. His election to the Pro Football, College Football, U.S. Olympic, and National Track and Field Halls of Fame testify to his extraordinary talents. In 1950 the Associated Press named him the greatest athlete of the first half century. Despite his fame, Thorpe's later years were marked by abject poverty and he died penniless in 1953. The sheet (4.5 x 2.75 inches) displays a few light creases and is in Very Good condition. Matted and framed together with a 7.75 x 10.5-inch black-and-white non-vintage photo of Thorpe on the football field. Total dimensions: 13 x 19.5 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $300/$500. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
