1964 Sports Illustrated Original Cover Painting by Bernie Fuchs Arnold Palmer Teeing Off

Starting Bid - 1000, Sold For - $-

Original artwork by renowned artist Bernie Fuchs, titled The Tournament , used as an interior illustration for the June 15, 1964, issue of Sports Illustrated . The work, executed in gouache and charcoal on paper (14.5 x 19.5 inches), pictures a golfer, as shown from behind, choosing a club from his bag. Signed by Fuchs in the lower right corner. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 20 x 25 inches. This painting was purchased by our consignor directly from Sports Illustrated in 1964, along with the foldout cover painting entitled Arnold Palmer Teeing Off (see previous lot), at which time he was told that the lone golfer portrayed here was also meant to represent Arnold Palmer. The painting has remained in his possession since that time. This artwork was one of a series produced by Fuchs for use as interior illustrations for Sports Illustrated's preview of the 1964 U.S. Open. A tear sheet of the original magazine illustration accompanies the painting. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $-
