1910 "Buffalo Bill" Cody Handwritten Letter
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,175.00
One-page handwritten letter, dated June 13, 1910, signed by William F. (“Buffalo Bill”) Cody. The letter, written on colorful “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Combined With Pawnee Bill’s Great Far East” letterhead (picturing both Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill), is addressed to “My Dear Clark” and reads in full: “Hope you will have a nice visit. No I will not visit England again with my Exhibition. We’re now headed for the home ranch. Yours truly – W. F. Cody.” Both the text and Cody’s signature have been scripted in black fountain pen and grade “9/10.” “Buffalo Bill” Cody (1846-1917) was one of the most famous figures in American history. Although his career took many turns, including soldier, trapper, hunter, Pony Express rider, and scout, his fame today is due in large part to his famous Wild West show that he toured the country with during the late 1800s and early 1900s. As this letter mentions, he even took his show overseas and performed throughout Europe. In 1908 he combined his Wild West show with that of Pawnee Bill’s and the two continued to tour for a number of years together. The letter (8.5 x 11 inches) displays normal mailing folds (one horizontal and two vertical), as well as a few tiny scattered stains. The date of the letter has, inexplicably, been gone over in blue ink in an attempt to make the date appear to be 1900 (upon close examination the date is clearly 1910). The front of the letter is in overall Excellent condition. Affixed to the bottom half of the reverse is a vintage 6 x 4-inch photo of Will Rodgers performing a roping exhibition (circa 1910), and the top half of the reverse bears a heavy amount of paper residue from having once been mounted, and then removed, from an album. All Buffalo Bill letters are rare and highly valued by collectors, but the extremely colorful stationery of this letter (which is unlike other Buffalo Bill letters we have seen and clearly rare) makes it all the more special and particularly ideal for display. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,175.00
