1938 R69 Gum, Inc. "Horrors of War" PSA-Graded Collection (5)

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $7,637.50

Addendum: The PSA population report information cited in the printed catalog is now out of date for several cards in this lot. While it is always the case that population reports in REA descriptions are as of the date the lot was written, we are providing updated pop report information for this lot online (below) as several cards were affected by newly graded cards and a reader was kind enough to point this out for us.

Collection of five extremely high-grade 1938 "Horrors of War" cards, including #288. Issued by Gum, Inc., "Horrors of War" is perhaps the single most famous nonsport-card set ever issued. This collection is comprised of five rare high-number series cards, each graded and encapsulated EX-MT 6 by PSA (except one): #282 (only one example graded higher), 284, 285 (only one example graded higher, and the grade on that card is qualified), 287 (only one graded higher), and 288 (condition rarity, last card in the set, EX 5, only one example graded higher, and the grade on that card is qualified). Three of the five cards in this lot are the highest-graded examples to date. The condition-sensitive last card in the set #288 is particularly noteworthy. We have found that cards from extremely popular sets with very low populations in the highest grades often sell for far more at auction than SMR, and this is especially the case with classic vintage sets from the 1930s. This is an extremely high-grade collection of five 1938 "Horrors of War" cards; three are the highest-graded examples. Total 5 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $7,637.50
