1912 L1 Leather Tobacco Premiums: George Washington & Buffalo Bill Cody (2)
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,115.00
Two rare 1912 L1 “Leathers”: George Washington and W. F. Cody (“Buffalo Bill”). Collectors are very familiar with the L1 Baseball Players, as these are among the most valuable of all baseball tobacco premiums, but the five Generals, which are a part of the same series, are just as rare. L1 Leathers were issued as part of the same promotion as T3 Turkey Reds and S81 Silks. All three of these issues were available only by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with Helmar "Turkish Trophies" brand tobacco. Ten coupons were needed to get a T3, twenty-five coupons for an S81 silk, and fifty coupons were required to obtain each L1 Leather. The L1 Leathers are by far the rarest of these three classic tobacco premium issues. The leathers measure 9.5 x 11.5 inches at their widest and tallest point. Each L1 is numbered. Washington is #201 and W. F. Cody is #205, exactly as they are numbered in the S81 silk premium set. These are two extremely high-grade Generals examples. Washington has one small wrinkle below his name and a few small surface wrinkles to the left of his sword, as is often the case with L1s (this is production-related); otherwise both are in spectacular Near Mint condition. These are as nice as L1s get! Two stunning examples of one of nonsport collecting's rarest tobacco premium issues. Total 2 leathers. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,115.00
