1941 R157 and R158 “Uncle Sam” Original Artwork Collection (5)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $1,527.50
Collection of five original artworks from Gum, Inc.'s "Uncle Sam" series. These are the actual artworks which were used to produce the following five cards in the classic R157 Uncle Sam nonsport card set: #76 "Crew of Pygmy Scout Car," 81 "Inspection Aboard Destroyer," 82 "Destroyer Torpedo Drill," 95 "Patrol Duty," and 100 "Air Raid Warden." Card #100 "Air Raid Warden" is technically from the R158 "Uncle Sam's Home Defense" set, which is an extension of the R157 "Uncle Sam" series. Each of the artworks is an ink line drawing on artist's board (8.5 x 10 inches). A thin glassine overlay has been neatly colored by Gum, Inc. artists. This overlay served as the color guide for the printer. Comic book art of this era was similarly produced by artists in black and white and printed in full color. All 1930s original gum card artwork is extremely rare. These artworks originate from the estate of Charles Steinbacher, the art director of Gum, Inc., and were saved until recent years by his family. The Steinbacher Collection of original Gum, Inc., card artwork will always be legendary as one of the most significant - perhaps the most significant - find of non-sport gum-card artwork in the history of collecting. All are in overall Excellent condition. Each artwork is accompanied by its corresponding issued "Uncle Sam" card. Total 5 artworks. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
