1903 E107 Breisch-Williams Sam Mertes

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $528.75

Encapsulated Authentic by SGC. E107 of outfielder Sam Mertes of the New York Nationals. Mertes is pictured wearing his Chicago White Sox uniform from the 1902 season but is identified with the New York Giants (his 1903 team). With the 1902 White Sox, Mertes led American League outfielders in assists, played at least one game at every position, and won the only game he ever pitched. The following year, as a Giants outfielder, he was the National League RBI leader. His 108 RBIs, 17 triples, and 52 stolen bases in 1905 put him near the top of the National League and helped New York to a World Championship. This low-grade example is designated "Authentic" by SGC (as opposed to a numerical grade) due to appearing upon very close inspection to be handcut. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $528.75
