1911 Jones, Keyser & Arras Christy Mathewson Cabinet Card

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $12,925.00

Presented is Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson, one of the key cards from the extremely rare cabinet card set issued in 1911 by Jones, Keyser & Arras Studios of New York City. Little is known about exactly how this unusual and remarkably high quality set was issued. Each card in the set features a mounted sepia-toned photograph on the front and the studio's name and address in the lower left on the reverse. This one of the rarest of all Christy Mathewson cards. Even a sample card from this set is extremely rare. The cabinet card (4.75 x 7.25 inches) has even wear at the corners, the hint of a surface crease visible only from the reverse, and some minor chipping along the top edge on the reverse. A small hologram sticker appears in the corner of the reverse. This sticker was on the piece when our consignor bought it. (We don't know exactly why someone would put a sticker on this card; it could be removed if desired.) The reverse of the card has ink and pencil notations which read "LK Ames — C Mathewson Season 1903" (we initially thought these might be signatures, but according to our authenticators, these are not signatures). The actual mounted photograph has superb contrast and is in Near Mint condition. The mount is in overall Very Good condition without reference to the sticker or reverse notations. One of the most striking and rarest of all Christy Mathewson cards, this is the first 1911 Jones, Keyser & Arras Mathewson that we have ever seen or offered. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $12,925.00
