1908 Ratsch Peerless Sporting Goods Advertising Postcard
Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $470.00
This extremely colorful advertising postcard, issued by the Chicago Sporting Goods Mfg. Co., features an illustration of the company’s new lithographic window display promoting its line of Ratsch Peerless athletic goods. The colorful graphics, combined with the game-in-progress scene, make this one of the most beautiful and substantial baseball advertising postcards ever produced. The printed caption along the bottom identifies the game scene as the “Championship Series 1908, Chicago Cubs vs. Detroit Tigers.” The preprinted script text on the reverse is dated “12/1/08” and reads, “This illustrates our window display panorama – Do you want one? If so write us & we will tell you how to get one free – Chicago Sporting Goods Mfg. Co.” The actual size of the panoramic window display (40 x 30 x 12 inches) is printed along the front. We have yet to see a surviving example of the window display panorama, but at least this postcard sent to store owners survives to show us what it looked like. This particular postcard is addressed to “J L Allen, Conway, Kan” and is postmarked “Dec 10 1908.” The postcard (5.5 x 3.5 inches) displays a few light creases, a small stain in the upper right corner, and a corner crease in the lower left. While technically in Very Good condition, none of the flaws significantly detracts from the card’s extraordinary visual appeal and it displays as Excellent. Reserve $200. Estimate $300+.
