1886-1888 N172 Old Judge Collection (57)
Starting Bid - $2,000.00 , Sold For - $23,500.00
Very attractive and clean group of N172 Old Judges including twenty-five cards ranging from Vg-Ex to Ex condition, twenty-two cards in slightly lesser grades (mostly ranging from Good to Vg), and ten cards in lower grades (still nice-looking cards). This is a newly discovered original-owner collection that has been saved in the same family since the 1880s. We have separated out the Hall of Famers and a Yum Yum Tobacco of John Clarkson to be offered as separate lots in this auction. These fifty-seven cards represent the balance of the collection and are highlighted by five Brownie Champ portraits, in Vg condition, a portrait card of Burdock (Boston) in Vg-Ex, and pitching star Tony Mullane, Cinn. (Vg). A complete listing of the cards follows: two Arundel (Indianapolis), two Bassett (Indianapolis), Brown (NY), Burch (St. Louis), Burdock (portrait, Boston), Bushong (Brownie Champs), Cahill (Indianapolis), Chreve (1888 copyright, Indianapolis), two Collins (NY), two Corcoran (Indianapolis), Daley (Boston), Deasley (NY), Denny (Indianapolis), Farrell (1888 copyright, Baltimore), Foutz, (Brownie Champs), Gerhardt (NY), Glasscock (Indianapolis), Harkins (1888 copyright, Baltimore), Healey (Indianapolis), Horning (Boston), two Johnston (Boston), Kemler (Brownie Champs), Latham (St. Louis), Mattimore (NY), three McCeachy (Indianapolis), Morrill (Boston), Mullane (Cincinnati), Myers (Indianapolis), Nash (Boston), O'Connor (1888 copyright, Cincinnati), O'Neil (Brownie Champs), O'Rourke (Boston), Purcell (Baltimore), Quinn (sliding pose, Boston), Richardson (Boston), two Richardson (NY), Roach (NY), Robinson (Brownie Champs), Schoeneck (Indianapolis), Seery (Indianapolis), Smith (Baltimore), Stemmeyer (Boston), Sutton (Boston), Tate (Boston), Viau (Cincinnati), Wheelock, (Boston), Whitney (NY), Wise (Boston), and Wolf (Louisville). Approximately ten cards exhibit minor imperfections (ink notations, stains, etc.) on their blank reverses, as is often the case with Old Judges. A little back damage on Old Judges usually "comes with the territory," especially since so many cards were originally saved in scrapbook albums. This is an exceptionally clean, newly discovered collection from a noncollector family. A great-looking group. Total 57 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $23,500.00
